Apple Ipad Pro 11 inch M4 Cellular 8GB RAM 256GB (2024) Description

Design

Meet the thinnest iPad to date! Apple has created an impressively slim, lightweight device with a 5mm aluminium unibody and durable screen glass. The iPad Pro boasts a sleek, flat design, except for the small camera bump on the back.

Design and Build

The front of the iPad Pro features an 11-inch Ultra Retina Tandem OLED screen, a long-awaited switch to OLED technology. The bezels are not particularly slim but provide a comfortable grip without obstructing the screen. The ultrawide front camera and Face ID are centred above the screen on one of the long sides, allowing Face ID to function in any tablet orientation.

The back of the iPad Pro is minimalistic, featuring only a glossy Apple logo, a small camera housing for the 12MP rear shooter, and the LiDAR system. While it would be ideal for the camera housing to sit flush with the back, including LiDAR justifies the slight protrusion, as it’s an essential feature for some users. The sides of the iPad Pro are thin and flat, housing four speakers, the power/lock key, volume keys, a USB-C port, and a magnetic holder for the Apple Pencil.

The iPad Pro’s aluminium body and matte finish provide an excellent grip, making it comfortable for any orientation. Although it is quite durable, it’s worth noting that it can bend and crack if excessive pressure is applied, so avoid sitting on it. The iPad Pro is an outstanding tablet with a sleek design, excellent build quality, and a comfortable grip. It is perfect for various tasks and usage scenarios.

Display

The long-rumored OLED upgrade for the iPad has finally arrived. Apple has introduced its new display technology, Ultra Retina XDR, featuring a Tandem OLED panel. Tandem OLED consists of two stacked organic light-emitting layers, allowing each layer to operate at lower power levels. This setup enables the screen to achieve higher brightness levels without accelerating OLED degradation, typically due to higher driving voltages. The outcome is a screen with exceptional brightness, durability, and longevity.

Display Comparison

Compared to the 14.6-inch Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, which uses a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, the 11-inch iPad Pro is slightly brighter and less reflective in SDR mode than the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra.

Despite the significant size difference, our focus is on the technology. However, when playing HDR content, the iPad Pro’s display performs noticeably better, highlighting Apple’s advancements in display technology.

Display Specifications

The iPad Pro’s 11-inch OLED screen features a resolution of 1,668 x 2,420 pixels, translating to 264 pixels per inch, and an aspect ratio of 3:2. It supports HDR10 and Dolby Vision, with a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits and a peak HDR brightness of up to 1,600 nits. The display also supports a wide colour gamut and True Tone enhancements.

Performance Metrics

Testing revealed that the iPad Pro 11’s display offers a maximum manual brightness of 592 nits and an automatic brightness of 994 nits, placing it at the top of the tablet brightness charts. The minimum brightness level at peak white is just one nit.

Nano-Texture Glass Option

For the 1TB and 2TB models, Apple offers an optional Nano-Texture display glass for an additional amount. This special laminating glass reduces reflectivity and maintains colour accuracy in challenging lighting conditions, making it particularly useful for professionals who require precise colour representation. Although our test model did not include this glass, online reviews confirm its effectiveness in minimizing reflections and preserving colour accuracy under bright light. The iPad Pro’s new OLED display with Tandem OLED technology delivers impressive brightness, durability, and colour accuracy, setting a new standard for tablet screens.

Refresh Rate

Apple’s iPad Pro 11 2024  features a dynamic refresh rate system that automatically adjusts based on displayed content. While users cannot manually control the refresh rate, it efficiently drops to 1Hz during static displays or standby modes to save power. Web pages can scroll at a fluid 120Hz refresh rate for smooth interactions. However, moving content embedded within web pages will be rendered at 60fps.

The new iPad Pro GPU supports various high refresh rate (HFR) games available on the App Store, allowing users to fully utilize the enhanced graphics performance.

Streaming and HDR

The iPad Pro 11 is certified for HDR10 and Dolby Vision, ensuring compatibility with high dynamic range content. It also meets the necessary DRM certifications, enabling services like Netflix and YouTube to stream HDR videos.

One standout feature is Apple’s approach to HDR playback. Unlike traditional methods that require a full-screen display for HDR content, the iPad Pro allows HDR to function on just the portion of the screen where the video is playing. This flexibility can be particularly striking, providing an enhanced viewing experience even within partial-screen displays.

Performance

The latest iPad comes with iPadOS 17.5.  Apple’s decision to rebrand iOS for iPad in 2019 reflected the significant enhancements made to the platform, marking an important evolution. This new version of iPadOS introduces advanced multi-tasking features and improved compatibility with USB-C accessories. It also enhances support for various input devices, including a mouse, keyboard, trackpad, and Apple Pencil.  The iPad Pro models now come equipped with Face ID. The user interface revolves around home screens filled with apps and widgets, the App Library for less frequently used apps, and the Notification and Control Centers. Quick actions can be accessed by tapping and holding on various apps throughout the home screens and the Dock.

Navigation gestures are similar to those found on the iPhone, but iPadOS also includes a special Dock gesture. You can swipe quickly from the bottom edge to close an app or swipe slowly to reveal the Dock for multi-tasking. The Dock is an essential tool for productivity—when working in full-screen mode, you can summon the Dock, drag an app icon, and open it in a floating window that can be positioned to the left or right. This feature, known as ‘Slide Over,’ allows apps to appear alongside full-screen ones in the Task Switcher.

For those who prefer a side-by-side view, Split Screen is available. You can activate it by tapping the three dots on any full-screen app, displaying a larger Snap Left/Right icon. Split View can also be created from within the Task Switcher by dragging one app over another.  Apple provides a suite of multimedia apps by default, such as Photos, Music, TV, Podcasts, Books, Safari, Home, and Files.

The Shortcuts app offers extensive automation possibilities. The latest iPad Pro models feature a LiDAR scanner, which accurately measures distances by emitting laser beams and analyzing their reflections. This capability allows the tablet to create precise 3D representations of objects and place them virtually in different environments. It’s perfect for visualizing new furniture or comparing the size of objects that can’t be placed side by side.

The LiDAR scanner is also highly accurate for measuring distances, functioning like a sophisticated digital tape measure. Professionals, such as interior designers, will find it particularly useful. Additionally, with its robust AR capabilities, the iPad Pro delivers impressive augmented reality experiences through various apps and games on the App Store. With enhanced accessory support, including mouse and keyboard integration, and the ability to install third-party apps, iPadOS is rapidly approaching the versatility of macOS.

Performance and Benchmarks

The new Apple M4 chip powers the iPad Pro 11 (2024). Built on a second-generation 3nm process, the M4 offers a significant performance boost, 1.5 times faster than the M2, with graphics improvements up to 4 times. It also enhances efficiency, delivering the same level of performance as the M2 but with half the power consumption. The M4 supports advanced AI features in applications like Final Cut Pro, providing up to 38 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second). In comparison, the Snapdragon X Elite achieves 45 TOPS.

The 256GB and 512GB models have a 9-core CPU (3 performance cores and six efficiency cores) operating up to 4.4 GHz and 8GB of RAM.  The 1TB and 2TB versions feature a 10-core CPU (4 performance cores and six efficiency cores) running at 4.4 GHz and 16GB of RAM.  Both configurations are equipped with the same 10-core GPU, which includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing and a 16-core Neural Engine.

Battery Life

According to Apple’s estimates, the Apple iPad Pro 11 (2024) is equipped with an 8,160 mAh battery, designed to deliver approximately 10 hours of web browsing or video playback. It supports over 37 hours of VoIP calls, nearly 10 hours of web browsing, more than 15 hours of web streaming, and over 8 hours of gaming. These results reflect strong performance across various use cases.

Charging Speed

The iPad Pro 11 (2024) supports fast charging up to 30W via USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). It has a braided USB-C cable but requires a separate USB-PD power adapter. Charging tests with a 60W Baseus PD charger that delivers the maximum 30W show that the battery can charge from 0% to 20% in 15 minutes. It can reach 41% at the 30-minute mark and 74% at 60 minutes. A full charge is completed in 106 minutes, a reasonable duration for a tablet of this calibre.

Speakers

The iPad Pro 11 (2024) has four sizable speakers on each of the tablet’s shorter sides. This design ensures a well-balanced and immersive audio experience. The audio quality is excellent, characterized by noticeable bass, clear vocals, and a rich high-frequency range. This setup delivers a robust, detailed sound experience, enhancing media consumption and user enjoyment.

Camera

The iPad Pro 11 (2024) features a 12MP rear camera with a 28mm f/1.8 lens and Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF). It also has a LED flash and a LiDAR scanner, allowing precise 3D object scanning. The rear camera can record video in 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second. The iPad Pro is equipped with a 12MP ultrawide-angle front camera for selfies and video calls. This camera supports Center Stage, a feature that uses the wide lens to keep you centred during FaceTime calls by zooming and panning as needed. Center Stage automatically adjusts to include everyone if more people enter the frame.

Regarding photo quality, the 12MP rear camera produces satisfactory results with good detail and dynamic range, although the colours can appear slightly subdued. This is a characteristic seen in many Apple devices, where the images often have a processed look due to the Smart HDR and Deep Fusion technologies. The rear camera’s video quality is comparable to the photos, delivering decent 4K footage with acceptable detail and dynamic range, though it is also subject to some over-processing. The front camera captures 1080p video, which is adequate but could be more detailed and undergo noticeable processing.
